NSF Seeks Reviewers for the Recovery and Reinvestment Academic Research Infrastructure Program (ARI-R²)

The National Science Foundation received $3.0 billion in the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  Of this, $200 million was
allocated for the Academic Research Infrastructure Program that will
be used for, as an NSF document explains, "the repair, renovation,
or in exceptional cases, the replacement of existing research
facilities."  NSF anticipates that 100 - 120 awards will be made
ranging from $250,000 to $10 million.

The foundation estimated in 2005 that there was $3.6 billion in
deferred repair or renovation projects in academic institutions.

Letters of intent were due to the foundation by July 1.  In response

Middle Class Jobs Turning Green

The newly-created Middle Class Task Force has announced a joint effort between the Departments of Education, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, and Labor to create green job opportunities for the middle class.

Each agency involved will have a specific role in developing this highly-anticipated White House initiative.

Leading the way is the Department of Labor, which has agreed to use $500 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) funds to train workers for green careers.

NIH Summer Research Site Opens

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has posted information on the summer laboratory experiences available to students and faculty through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and other supplemental funding.

Scientists and institutions receiving administrative supplements to host these summer experiences have registered in a database, which is searchable by zip code.

After identifying the location and researcher of interest, students and faculty are responsible for submitting an e-mail to the contact person to initiate an application. As more awards are made, the list of available summer experiences is expected to grow, so potential participants are encouraged to check the database often.

National Institutes of Health Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are continuing to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. Since Fiscal Year (FY) 1985, Congressional appropriations for the NIH have included funds for this initiative, which the NIH has implemented through the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program.
